Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), in a letter to George Weah, President of Liberia has expressed concern over the attack on Roots FM radio station on January 31st, 2019.
PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali has denounced this attack on radio station and called on the Liberian authorities to immediately investigate the matter and hold those responsible behind this act.
According to Center for Media Studies & Peace Building (CEMESP), in the early morning three armed men attacked the station owned and operated by one of the popular talk show host Henry Costa
The attackers held the security guards at gun point and assaulted them before entering the studio to destroy number of broadcasting equipment’s.
The attack was followed by a talk-show broadcasted on January 30th in which Mr. Costa declared that he will go off air for one month if opposition political parties fail to peacefully protest to stop President George Weah’s unlawful agreements with foreign companies.
Though it is determined that the attack on station is a retaliation from some supporters of the Liberian government disturbed by series of revelations about alleged illegal foreign deals, including the fishing company from Senegal awarded three hundred fishing licenses for five years. The Senegalese company will be allowed to catch forty thousand tons of fish from Liberia each year.
A case has been registered in the Liberian National Police for investigation.
