PPF welcomes the decision of MJU’s judge to imprison perpetrators of journalist

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Lenín Moreno, President of Ecuador has welcomed the decision of Multicomponent Judicial Unit’s (MJU) judge to imprison the attackers of journalist Alex Javier Guevara Cruz.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter welcomed the decision of judge to hold those responsible for assaulting journalist in the line of duty. PPF also called on the authorities to provide safe and secure environment for journalists and media workers.

According to Fundamedios – Andean Foundation for Media Observation and Study, after three adjourned hearing, the perpetrators of the journalist were sentenced to six months imprisonment.

Guevara, the editor of the weekly My City and the digital radio Mi stereo city was attacked on October 25 while he was covering in the Municipality.

The vice mayor of the city, Alex Hernandez informed the journalist that the municipal employees are drunk at the office of the Council for Children and Adolescents and the Rights Protection Board. Hernandez along with the councilors Maria Gonzalez and Sarita Espin waited for the journalist, they also called the police.

Guevara added that when he reached at the office there were about seven to eight municipal officials who were drunk and started abusing and threatening the journalist, the scene was recorded and broadcasted live on Facebook.

After that an official, Juan Pablo Bonilla came outside in aggressive way to attack Guevara and the vice mayor. The police detained the attackers.
