Security guards damaged my reputation: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif expressed regret over the assault of a private television channel cameraman and said the behaviour of his security guards had damaged his reputation. Journalists staged a protest on the arrival of Mr Sharif in the accountability court on Tuesday.

Mr Sharif, however, went straight to the courtroom to attend the trial proceeding in the Flagship Investment reference.

During the mid-break, he met the reporters in the office of the Islamabad Bar Council and responded to their questions about the incident in which his security guards assaulted and injured cameraman Wajid Ali of Samaa TV on Monday.

“I am equally grieved as you are, deeply saddened and regret this incident.”

Mr Sharif said his security supervisor Abdul Shakoor was clearing his way and escorting him towards his vehicle on the premises of Parliament House. All of a sudden the cameraman emerged as I was getting into the vehicle. When Mr Shakoor pushed him away, the cameraman hit him back causing a minor injury to his (Mr Shakoor’s) face, he said.

“I left the Parliament House and was later informed that my security guards had beaten up the cameraman and injured him.

“Such acts are uncalled for and cannot be tolerated by any means. I will take every possible step to take the culprits to task,” he added. However, he said the media should also adopt a mechanism of its own accountability.

Mr Sharif said he was well aware of the importance of free and fair media and was thankful to those who scribed truth despite all odds.

Human rights education for a vision

As per world report 2018 by Human Rights Watch, Women, Religious minorities , children and transgender faced violent attack, and discrimination throughout the year. A recent report by HRCP declares the same dismal situation of human rights in Pakistan with restrictions on freedom of expression, freedom of movement misused continuation of blasphemy law and harassment against different segments of society. It’s really surprising that in a society with a majority of Muslims, who learns by heart the last sermon of the Holy Prophet PBUH,the violations of fundamental rights seem to be more frequent rather than getting under control. The recent video of a cleric punishing the students brutally explain well the plight of childrens rights , as there must be many more unreported un heard.

We need to understand in the light of above observation that there is some missing link in our system of education when it comes to human rights education as a part of our national curriculum and education policies. Human Rights education if imparted with a true spirit  can lead  to a cohesive society ,integrated ,stable ,it builds respect for non violent conflict resolution and peace ,positive social transformation ,economic development Tolerance access to justice  rule of law , acceptance of diversity ,inclusion are the ideal out comes if the human rights education is effectively incorporated in the existing schemes of studies Education in any state is the first element that can help in defining a vision for the nation. Unfortunately we really need to redefine our educational goals for the formation of a unified vision as multiple streams of education are currently imparting knowledge but in isolation and each one believing to be moving in right direction no matter a religious seminary ,private schools or the public Looking at the history of education reforms in Pakistan the first step was in the form of All Pakistan Education Conference in 1947 which was chaired by Mr.Fazlur Rehman the that time minister of education , interior, broadcasting and information. The conference set the dimensions for system of education as social spiritual and vocational. The multiple discussion points of the  conference emphasized the integration of moral social and vocational elements ,compulsory primary education, training of citizen ship ,addressing the issue of medium of instruction ,technical and vocational education etc  with recommendations that education should be teamed with Islamic values ,free and compulsory education. It also  emphasized  on science and technology. With these initial basic point the journey continued with the commission on national education in 1959,New education Policy 1970 ,1978,1992,1998 ,2009 till the education policy f 2017 and in recent past the launch of national education policy frame work, let’s see where this drive takes us.

Since Pakistan was created in the name of religion, that slogan was kept alive by all the governments, no matter democratic or dictatorial as it was sometimes a tool, a remedy or a camouflage to keep the religious opponents under control without the slightest realization that the system of education isn’t something to be played with as it involves the mind making of generations

Since Pakistan was created in the name of religion, that slogan was kept alive by all the governments, no matter democratic or dictatorial as it was sometimes a tool, a remedy or a camouflage to keep the religious opponents under control without the slightest realization that the system of education isn’t something to be played with as it involves the mind making of generations.

That’s why even in the eras of  dictators like Ayub khan and Zia ul Haq and Musharaf , every education policy would be with a touch of religious ingredient and each policy revolved around the basic dimensions set in 1947. Along with policy making the national curriculum did keep on going changes and reforms till 2006. The text books are written in alignment with the national policy and curriculum. We see the minimal presence of Human rights and human rights education in the real sense as all the efforts are being made in Islamizing the content plus the topic itself is dealt in arobotic manner whatever level it is. For example the social studies in grade five has a chapter named Aeen which mentions in a very vague manner the fundamental  rights without giving a clarity that these rights are meant for men women , Muslims non Muslims equally. At this stage of education young ones really need to oriented to the basics of fundamental human rights  and responsibilities with  their  importance for a cohesive  and democratic society Though we are Islamic republic of Pakistan and Islamic injunctions and directive need to be followed. However we are living in a global village where it is really important to respect and accept the diversity of faith cultures with understanding and clarity and this clarity has to be a part of the vision of the future leaders. To add further we need to realize that human rights are an established reality no matter which religion one belongs to as they are an eternal part of human nature and directly related to the development of any society to promote coexistence. A global and universal approach towards Human Rights is missing at the higher level of education as well. Like the Pakistan studies taught at bachelors level while discussing the constitutional evolution  shares the criticism on Objectives Resolution by Molan Shabir Usmani by writing “Unhon nay kaha Aqliatoon ko Zaroorat say Zyad Ahmiat di gai ahay aur unhain policy banana walay Idaron main nahin Rakhna Chahye (rights of minorities are given excessive importance ,they shouldn’t be a part of the policy making institutions ) followed by a sentence that the Hindus showed their reservation on this comment of Molana etc. It is beyond understanding that the criticism  is left unattended without a slightest justification that  the criticism of Molana was the criticism of   core constitutional and universal  right of equality actually. The same book while discussing constitutional history ,mainly focuses on the induction of Islamic injunctions into the constitution. At one point it narrates that the Islamic reforms of 19 77 were  actually an Islamic revolution. The whole episode depicts a picture as if Muslims and Islam was in danger so the revolution was needed. Where is equality ,where is acceptance of diversity ,though articles are quoted for the protection of the rights of minorities ? Where is Jinah s vision of 11th August? A reader at any point doesn’t come across the ones who are different by any means. It can be said that one of the major reason for growing religious intolerance, violence against women and transgender, child abuse is of course that the key ingredient for a peace full society the existence and acceptance of Human rights is hardly shared with the learners with real life and practical examples In the current scenario where ever one comes across the Human Rights in our books they at times seem to be  men’s or women  rights but they are the rights of transgender. In addition they are more of Muslims Rights rather than the rights of  non Muslims who are equal citizens of Pakistan , it does talk of freedom of expression but doesn’t ensure that freedom of expression doesn’t mean hate speech or character assassination. The  content in our books is mainly promoting rights of the Muslims leaving the equal citizenry for the non Muslims as a puzzle. The understanding of the idea can only be ensured if it is  a part of the educational vision of a state and it needs to be an be an integral part of all tiers of  education starting from primary education along with  both formal and informal education.

TV cameraman hospitalised after being assaulted by Nawaz Sharif’s guards

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s security guards assaulted and injured the cameraman of a private news channel outside Parliament House on Monday.

Mr Sharif met his brother Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif and senior PML-N leaders, including ex-prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, besides attending a meeting of the party.

As he was leaving the Parliament House, journalists and cameramen rushed towards him.

When the cameraman of Samaa TV, Syed Wajid Ali, approached Mr Sharif, one of the security guards pushed him so violently that he fell on the ground.

Another guard then ran towards him and jumped on the head of the fallen cameraman. Journalists present at the scene then rushed towards the injured cameraman who had fallen unconscious.

The two security guards tried to board a vehicle of Mr Sharif’s motorcade but the journalists caught them. In the meantime, Mr Sharif’s cavalcade left the premises. National Assembly speaker orders registration of case against security guards

Other people present at the scene got the guards freed but later one of them was captured again and handed over to the sergeant-at-arms of the Parliament House while the other managed to escape.

The cameraman was taken to Polyclinic from where he was referred to Pims and kept under observation.

In protest, mediapersons closed the main gate of the Parliament House and stopped lawmakers from entering the building. They demanded legal action against the security guards.

National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser ordered registration of a case against the security guards. Besides, he also imposed a ban on the entry of private security guards in the Parliament House. The speaker ordered that in future no one would be allowed to enter the Parliament House with security guards.

Secretariat Police Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Asjad Mehmood told Dawn that a medico-legal certificate of the injured had been sought from the hospital.

“He is being examined by doctors who would issue the certificate after which the case would be registered against the security guards,” he added.

One of the security guards is in the custody of the sergeant-at-arms in the Parliament House and would soon be taken into custody for further legal action, he added.

“The guards of Mr Sharif attacked and injured the cameraman when the latter was performing duty and tried to make a video of his departure from the Parliament House,” the SHO added.

When contacted, Samaa’s Bureau Chief Khalid Azeem said the cameraman was making footage of Mr Sharif’s departure when the security guards assaulted him.

“He was performing his duty which is neither a security breach nor privacy breach,” he added.

It is the fourth incident in which the PML-N leader targeted the staff of Samaa TV, Mr Azeem said, adding: “It seems to be preplanned. We air factual news and if anyone has objection over it he should rectify himself,” he added.

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, while speaking on the floor of the house, tendered apology to the cameraman.

He also assured the house that he and his party would not come in the way of the legal course of action.

In a statement issued by PML-N, Nawaz Sharif condemned the incident.

“As soon as I came to know about the incident I directed my party leaders to take the cameraman to hospital and make arrangements for his treatment,” Mr Sharif said.

He said he and his party had immense respect for all journalists, camerapersons and photographers.

“I will not tolerate any individual in my staff who is found guilty of mistreating a person in such a way. We will ensure that this sort of regrettable, condemnable incident never happens in future.”

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb met the injured cameraman at Polyclinic.

In a statement, she said Mr Sharif had taken strict notice of the incident and the security guard would be punished.

Ms Aurangzeb said Mr Sharif had personally asked her to supervise the treatment of the injured.

‘My guard was hit first’: Nawaz defends guard who attacked SAMAA TV cameraman

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif defended the guard responsible for the attack on SAMAA TV cameraman Wajid Ali outside parliament on Monday.

The PML-N Quaid, who was apologetic before, put the entire blame on the cameraman while he spoke to media inside the accountability court chamber on Tuesday.

He said that his guard, identified as Shakoor, was in front of him and he was moving people away from him. “I was watching him. He pushed the cameraman. However, he [cameraman] hit Shakoor on the forehead with his camera after which he was injured,” he said.

The journalists’ community said that cameramen can never do that as they hold their cameras to be extremely precious. Others pointed out that no one saw the injury on Shakoor’s forehead, adding that there was no medical report either.

Interestingly, Nawaz’s statements are in complete contradiction to what he said before. He remarked: “I assure you that such actions will not be held in future.” The PML-N Quaid has taken notice of the attack. “I condemn the attack on Wajid Ali,” he said, adding that he was quite saddened by it. I ordered his treatment when I got to know about it, Nawaz said. “I respect the journalists’ community a lot,” he added.

Was Nawaz there or not?

Nawaz’s statements have created confusion as to if he were present when the attacked occurred or not. On Monday, PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb remarked that Nawaz was not present when the attack occurred. However, Nawaz portrayed himself to be an eye-witness.

She remarked that Nawaz had left parliament when the incident happened, adding that he found out about it later. “Nawaz himself called me and informed me about it.” She said that strict action will be taken against the guard.

Punjab Information Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan remarked that the country knows about Nawaz’s attitude and behaviour. “His guard took down a cameraman like a wrestler and rather than firing him, Nawaz has jumped in for his defence,” he said. He is stubborn on this issue like he has been on other issues.

Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed said that chief justice should take notice of the attack. He remarked that a case should be registered against Nawaz too. Rasheed was speaking to media outside Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad.

The attack

SAMAA TV cameraman Wajid Ali was left unconscious after being attacked by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s bodyguards outside parliament on Monday. His condition is said to be stable now.

Ali was making footage of Nawaz Sharif while he was leaving parliament. His camera hit the shoulder of Nawaz’s chief security officer by mistake. The enraged security officer ordered his subordinates to “get that boy and teach him a lesson”. The security guards pushed Wajid Ali on the ground and one kicked his skull. The cameraman fell unconscious with blood dripping from his nose and mouth. The disqualified prime minister didn’t notice it and left in his vehicle without his security protocol.

The enraged security officer ordered his subordinates to “get that boy and teach him a lesson”. The security guards pushed Wajid Ali on the ground and one kicked his skull. The cameraman fell unconscious with blood dripping from his nose and mouth.

A case has been registered against three security guards under sections 355 (assault with intent to dishonour a person) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860. Two security guards have been taken into custody.
