Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Vincent Mhlanga, Prime Minister of Swaziland has expressed concern over the attack on a journalist Mduduzi Mngomezulu on September 28.
PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter, has called on the authorities to investigate this matter and hold those responsible for assaulting Mngomezulu. PPF also urged to provide safe environment to journalists for fulfilling their journalistic duties.
According to Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), Mngomezulu was assaulted by the protestors while covering teachers protest near the United States Embassy in Mbabane.
Mngomezulu is a photojournalist with National daily newspaper, The Swazi Observer. He went for the coverage of a protest organized by the Swaziland National Association of Teachers for higher salaries. Protesters assaulted the journalist and also tried to seize his camera. He got his camera back after the interference of union’s leadership.
MISA further added that, Mngomezulu informed the local Mbabane police station about the incident. Police is investigating the matter.
