Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), in a letter to Peter Mutharika, President of Malawi has expressed concern over the assault and detention of journalist, John Paul Kayuni.
PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali, has denounced the vicious attack and detention of journalist in the line of duty and urged the authorities to drop all charges against Kayuni. PPF also called on the law enforcement agencies and authorities to stop targeting journalists.
According to Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), a police officer’s group assaulted and detained Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) journalist Kayuni for taking pictures and covering the protests organized by the Association of People with Albinism near M1 road.
The journalist in an interview on March 9 stated that, “They hit me in the head. I have a severe headache and body pains.”
The journalist was taken to Africa Bible College Hospital for treatment. Later the journalist was arrested and charged for allegedly having torn shirt of a plain clothed officer. Kayuni has been released on bail.
