On June 14, anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan was released after a Lahore court discharged him in a new case. The court dismissed the latest charges against him due to lack of evidence, leading to his release by the Lahore police.
The anchorperson was arrested on June 11 from the Allama Iqbal International Airport as he prepared to depart for Saudi Arabia for Hajj in a case pertaining to monetary fraud.
During a hearing before the Model Town Court judicial magistrate on June 12, the police had sought a seven-day physical remand of Riaz Khan. The prosecutor claimed that the anchorperson had borrowed Rs0.25 billion from the complainant but had not repaid the amount. Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Kamran Zafar granted the police a one-day physical remand.
On June 13, Riaz was discharged in the fraud case but rearrested from outside the court on a new set of charges. As per Express Tribune, Riaz Khan and others were accused of driving at high speed, breaking security barriers, and damaging state property.
Upon reviewing the case, the court found no evidence that Riaz Khan was driving and ordered his release on June 14.
The court observed there was no evidence that Imran Riaz used criminal force to deter a public servant from duty. The police record did not explain how the accused obstructed the public servant.
