Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), in a letter to Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo has expressed concern over the attack on Radio Télévision Fraternité, a community based station in Mbuji-mayi, a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo on March 16.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali has condemned the attack on station and urged the authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators responsible behind this attack. PPF also called on the newly elected government of Congo to guarantee the protection of journalists.

According to the Journaliste en danger (JED), the supporters of the newly elected presidents’ party, who were disputing the local results of the senate elections, ransacked the station, windows were damaged, the entrance door was forcefully opened and equipment’s were also stolen and damaged.

Donat Muamba, director of the station informed that the attackers were the angry supporters of President Félix Tshisekedi’s party, the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS).

The supporters were angry about the success of former President Joseph Kabila’s coalition, the Common Front for the Congo (FCC), in the senate elections held in the previous days.

The motive behind the attack on station was broadcast of a report on the new elected senators, including the former governor of the province Mr. Ngoy Kasanji. The attackers believed that Kasanji was present in the station for a programme.
