While taking the notice of safety and security issues being faced by journalists and media workers, Sindh information department has appointed a focal person to address the problems.
The decision has been taken followed by the meeting between Secretary Information Department Imran Atta Soomro and Owais Aslam Ali, secretary general of Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF). PPF held meeting with Secretary Information few days ago and had shared problems being faced by the journalist community in Pakistan with special focus on the cases of slain journalists.
Focus person will be responsible to monitor the crimes against journalists and will follow the cases of slain/ attacked journalists and media houses. Appointed by secretary information Imran Atta Soomro, the Dr Muizzuddin Peerzada, deputy director information department will be striving for the possible remedies to journalists with the support and guidance of the Secretary information, Government of Sindh.
According to notification number PS/SECY/INFO/2016/286 dated 6th December, 2016 issued by information department that focal person will be acting as bridge between Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and media for better coordination and following up the cases of slain journalists.
Focal point will be extending support and facilitation with fact finding on the issues of terrorism, street crimes and personal conflicts being faced by journalists and media professionals.
Owais Aslam Ali, secretary general of leading civil society organization, Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) has applauded the efforts of Sindh government, particularly the secretary information Imran Atta Soomro for the initiative with regard to safety of journalists in Sindh.
He said PPF will provide details of slain and attacked journalists as their cases were pending since years and media professionals and their families had been waiting for justice.
