PPF condemns arrest, brief detention of photojournalist in Nepal

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), in a letter to Khadga Prasad Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal has expressed concern over the arrest and brief detention of photojournalist Barsha Shah.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali has condemned this unacceptable action of police and considered it an attack on freedom of expression. PPF also urged the authorities and law enforcement agencies to stop attacking journalists and allow journalists and media workers to work freely in the line of duty.

According to Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), police arrested and detained Shah for three hours on December 13. Shah, a photojournalist with Deshsanchar.com was taking pictures of the protestors, who were demonstrating outside the President’s Office at the Shital Niwas in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The protestors reached their to hand over a crowd funded toy car as a symbolic protest to the government’s decision to purchase expensive luxurious bullet-proof car.

The journalist was arrested though she showed her press card. After three hours of detention Shah was later released and the Deputy Superintendent of Police Phadindra Prasai apologized for the behavior.
