Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), in a letter to Juan Orlando Hernandez, President of Honduras has expressed deep concern over the raid on the station of Radio Globo and arrest of journalist David Romero, director of the station.
PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali has denounced the raid on station and arrest of its director and urged the concerned authorities to immediately release the journalist and stop targeting him for doing his job.
According to the Comité por la Libre Expresión – C-Libre, the Honduran police officers on March 28, 2019 barged into the premises of station, broke the gates, damaged part of station and threatened the journalists.
The station’s was broadcasting while the officers attacked the premises, both Romero and his colleague Gustavo Blanco announced the violent entry of armed men who broke the main gate of station, the officers than entered and arrested Romero.
The journalist is a strong critic of President Juan Orlando Hernandez and arrest order against him resulted in a defamation conviction. Romero was given a 10-year imprisonment sentence in 2016 after he was convicted on several counts of defamation for his reporting on the wife of an ex-attorney general. Honduras’ Supreme Court rejected Romero’s bid for a new trial earlier this year.
