PPF condemns murder of Brazilian journalist

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil has expressed deep concern over the murder of Robson Giorno, founder of the news website Jornal O Maricá.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter has condemned the brutal murder of a journalist and called on the Brazilian authorities to immediately investigate the matter and prosecute those responsible behind his murder.

According to the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), Giorno was attacked by a group of unidentified individuals outside his residence in the town of Maricá, state of Rio de Janeiro on May 25.

Giorno was the owner and founder of the Jornal O Maricá, an online newspaper covering local news and politics in Maricá, and was also the reporter for the news website.

Giorno in his stories on Jornal O Maricá, has frequently criticized local politicians for alleged corruption or absenteeism.

Giorno was also the chairman of the Social Liberal Party (PSI) in Maricá and a candidate for mayor’s office in 2015 was shot three times. Currently he was a candidate for the post of mayor representing Avante party in Maricá’s 2020 municipal election.
