Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico has expressed concern over the killing of Javier Enrique Rodríguez Valladares, a cameraman for a local television channel.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter, condemned this brutal attack on the cameraman and urged the Mexican government to thoroughly investigate the murder of Rodríguez Valladares and identify those responsible for this act.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), on August 29, at around 6:00 in the afternoon Rodríguez Valladares was shot dead by unidentified assailants. He was working as a cameraman for Canal 10, a local television channel based in Cancún, in the southern Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

El Balcón, a local news website, uploaded a video on its Facebook page in which Germán Espiridión, a coworker of Rodríguez Valladares said, “The reporter had previously worked for national broadcaster Televisa and that he also bought and sold cars.”

According to a statement by the state attorney general’s office, the cameraman was attacked on Supermanzana 29, a street in the residential area in Cancún. He was with another person who was also killed but his identity is still unknown.

The statement further added that at the time of the attack the cameraman was off duty and not wearing any press ID, and also that it was still not clear whether Rodríguez Valladares was killed because of his profession.

This is the third deadly attack on journalists in Quintana Roo in the last two months. On July 24, Rubén Pat Cauich, co-founder and editorial director of online news outlet Semanario Playa News, was murdered in Playa del Carmen, a resort city south of Cancún. Another reporter for Playa News, José Guadalupe Chan Dzib, was also murdered on June 29 in the town of Sabán. No accused have been detained in either case.
