ISLAMABAD: The journalist community widely condemned the attack on the female anchor of Geo News Sana Mirza and other journalists by PTI workers in Lahore on Monday.
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the Council of Pakistan Press Clubs have given a call for a protest against the misbehaviour and manhandling of journalists by workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) during their protest in Lahore.
The journalists community will hold a protest rally in front of the National Press Club (NPC) today (Tuesday) and similar demonstrations would also be held in other cities, including Lahore and Karachi.
It is pertinent to mention here that the PTI supporters attacked the Geo News team in Lahore, including a seasoned anchorperson Sana Mirza, senior political analyst Sohail Waraich, senior reporter Ameen Hafeez, Asim Naseer, Jawad Malik, Ahmad Faraz and cameraman Raja Amir.
Sana Mirza, who was giving live updates on Geo News from Lahore, was repeatedly targeted with bottles and foul language by the PTI workers, and eventually she was unable to hold back her tears during the live transmission.
Ameen Hafiz, known for his charm and unique reporting style, is one of the most popular and loved journalists in Lahore, but the PTI crowds shot a glass-projectile that struck him on the forehead, forcing him on his knees.
Presidents of NPC and Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) have urged the journalists to participate in the protest in large numbers to show the PTI and other political parties that they would not make any compromise over the freedom of expression.
The protest rally in Islamabad would be led by PFUJ President Afzal Butt, NPC President Shahrayar Khan and RIUJ President Ali Raza Alvi.
